Visits
- 2013-02-14: We arrived in the airport at Jorhat to begin our journey to Kaziranga National Park. The idea was to see the rhinos that are still running around as well as the third species of gibbon, the howlook. The airport was a small mob of taxi drivers, and we decided to take one to a "tourist office" listed in the outdated guidebook that we had taped together. The tourist office was really a hotel, and they could not understand why we weren't checking into the hotel right away. I guess some people just drive to the park from there. After some more trouble making phone calls, we ended up on a packed bus heading toward the park. The park was a nice spot, and we met some friendly travelers from other parts of India at the hotel. I was happy to be eating India food for a change, and we also tried some regional specialties from Assam. We drove around a lot in the jeep, and we were lucky enough to see gibbons in two locations. Rhinos, monkeys and elephants were running around everywhere. We even heard a tiger roaring as well as some poachers murdering rhinos for their horns. The hiking possibilities were limited due to the general lawlessness in the hills.
