Visits

  • 2012-07-10: The next stop was the Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge near Jamestown. While I was at the rest stop, I learned that there is a special birding map available for the Jamestown area. The people in the gas station had no idea what I was talking about, however, and they had never heard of Arrowwood. After driving around town for a few minutes, I did manage to find the road to the refuge. It was approaching mid-day, and the weather was starting to get hot. I spent some time at the Sharp-tailed Grouse lek, but it was way too late in the season to see anything there. There was a walking trail full of warblers and even a raccoon. I never did find the bird-finding map. The sandpipers that I was hoping to see remained mostly hidden, but just outside the refuge, I did find a pool with a few sandpipers as well as the Black Tern. One of the biologists at the refuge told me about some displaying Upland Sandpipers, but those were nowhere to be found. Birds 6, Scott 2
