Visits

  • 2012-01-11: Leaving the Milford Sound area, we moved on next to Manapouri where we stayed on a farm just outside of town. Manapouri was an important flashpoint for the New Zealand environmental movement, and the lake was mostly saved from some crazy hydro scheme. The main reason to visit here would be to cruise on the Doubtful Sound, but I didn't really have the inclination to pay over $200 for the privilege. So, we pretty quickly moved on from town toward Dunedin taking the scenic route with stops at the recently restored Rakatu Wetlands, a caving expedition to see glow worms in Clefdon, a falafel stop in Invercargill, the petrified forest in Curio Bay, and the McLean Falls in the Catlins. Most of the day was spent driving, though, and the Hector's Dolphins that are supposed to live at Curio Bay never did show up.
