• 2009-07-21: We tried to get the train to arrive in the Shanghai area, but there were no seats available. So we did a flight/bus/taxi combo to arrive in Moganshan for the eclipse. We had some trouble with aggressive taxi drivers in Wukang, but we finally ended up with one guy with a van. Instead of dropping us at our hotel, however, he left us at a path from which we had to climb several hundred steps to get to our destination. We met our friends at the Moganshan Lodge which had tasty and expensive food. We spent quite a bit of time at the restaurant and on our hotel room balcony (which had awesome views). "Dr. Eclipse," from Berkeley, made a short lecture on the night before the solar eclipse in which he bragged that he was 10 for 10 in seeing total eclipses. He had never been clouded out! He also suggested that it was better not to move to a more promising location in the event of clouds. After his speech, I was pretty much convinced that he had jinxed us all, and I thought back to last year where we saw the eclipse only because we made a last minute dash to a more sunny location.
