The area surrounding the campsite was mostly second growth thorn forest. The Rio Tempisque floods into a flat area near the campground providing freshwater marsh. It looked possible to take a boat to the estuary area, but I am not sure how you would arrange that. We planned to stay a couple of nights here, but the weather was extremely hot. So, we hitchhiked with a ranger to another park nearby with a waterfall and swimming hole. Despite the bad weather, we were able to get in some good wildlife viewing... we even had three species of monkey in our campsite.

Visits

  • 2009-02-18: We took a bus from Liberia to Bagaces where we found a taxi to take us into Palo Verde National Park. We set up camp in a pretty run down camping area amid a small mango orchard. For dinner, we took advantage of an on-site cafeteria. The weather was very hot and dry, so we did not stay long, instead opting to hitch with a ranger to another nearby park with a waterfall. We did get a nice show in the morning when three species of monkey visited the campsite.
