- 2013-01-18: The escape from Phong Nha Ke Bang was delayed when our taxi did not show up on time. Amazingly, the taxi driver gave us a discount from the price that was quoted. And it turned out fine that the taxi was late because the train was late too. We rode the train to Danang where we were set upon by every taxi driver in Northern Vietnam. Of course, they were all ready to overcharge for the ride to Hoi An. I guess that every tourist in Vietnam is going there. Hoi An is your standard tourist trap "old city" area. Places like this are an enigma to me as I cannot see any benefit to travelling across the world to do the same shopping that you can do at home. It seemed that every business in town was selling cooking classes, massage, or taxis, and they were ready to let you know about it as well. If that sounds terrible, I will give credit to the people of Hoi An to not press the issue with their sales pitch.
