  • 2012-07-11: I arrived in Bismark in time to catch part of the MLB All Star game. The bravado was high, and I let everyone know that the Giant's players were proving that they were the right choices for the National League starting lineup. Little did I know that one All Star Game MVP would soon be a huge embarrassment to the Giants, and maybe our playoff chances were not so good after all. At any rate, I saw a report on the internet regarding McKenzie Slough near Bismark that suggested a good chance to see the shorebirds that I was looking for. I even back-tracked 15 miles to get to the spot only to be waylaid by the police the minute that I got there. It was like a scene straight out of the movie Fargo minus the violent parts. After successfully convincing the cop that the car was not stolen, and that I was looking for sandpipers and not a place to dump a body, I made my way to the "trails" at the slough. This was one of those times where it is good to be solo, as I am sure that any of my friends or relatives would have dumped my body out there had I made them wade through that swamp. Alas, the sandpipers had migrated, and I dipped again. Birds 10, Scott 4
