Visits

  • 2012-06-02: I woke up early, and I was surprised to find my brother willing to look for the Kirtland's Warbler in the rain. We drove north to Grayling, Michigan to meet up with the wildlife biologist. There was an impressive group at the site despite the fact that it was raining and not too far above freezing. As soon as we got to the site, we heard a couple of the warblers singing. It was difficult to find the birds in the dense shrubs, though, and we spent the better part of two hours walking around in the wind and rain with only a few cursory views. A couple of people gave up at this point. At last, we were running out of time, and it was time to head back to Grayling for the 11:00am tour. As it so often seems to work, we encountered a pair of the warblers essentially on the path after we had given up hope on any chance for a good viewing.
