A small town with a lake full of motor boats. This is where the tourists that hate the blackflies (sandflies) were staying.

Visits

  • 2012-01-08: We moved on from Queenstown to Te Anau. For a day hike, we went over to the Kepler Track area. We started out walking on the trail along the lake. That trail was scenic, but there was a pretty much relentless drone of motor boats on the lake. That is not exactly what I want to hear while hiking about. We turned back, and we followed the outflow of the lake instead. This was a much better hike as there were only a couple of kayaks on a crystal clear river. We hung out by the river for awhile, and we never made it to the higher altitude portions of the trail. One of the tricky things in our first few days in New Zealand was the late sunset. The mind was tricked into thinking it was much earlier than it was in reality. We ended up rushing back into town so as not to miss dinner.
