Volcan Baru is a national park near Boquette, and the peak is the highest point in all of Panama. The national park consists of farmland, cloud forest, and a rocky elfin forest near the peak. On a clear day, it is possible to see the Caribbean and the Pacific from this peak.

Visits

  • 2009-03-01: After the back-breaking hiking trip into Corcovado National Park, we were ready for an easy day. So, we woke up at 5:00 AM to conquer the 20 mile round-trip hike up the Volcan Baru... Panama's highest point. It is worth noting that half of the hike in this "National Park" was actually hiking through farms. This hike was probably the most difficult day of our entire trip. It took the entire day to negotiate the 5000 foot elevation change (10,000 feet up and back). The path to the top is on a road, but the road is so poor that I can honestly say I have done several easier off-track hikes. The road was very steep and slippery, and there were several falls on the way down the mountain. My knees are still killing me from this hike.
