Cartago is a suburb of San Jose, Costa Rica. It is near the Volcan Irazu. Of minor interest in the town are a couple of ruined churches.

Visits

  • 2009-02-23: After the hassles that we got in San Jose, we took the local bus to the suburb of Cartago. We had the intention of trying to go to nearby Volcan Irazu the next morning. Cartago was reasonably sketchy at night... in fact this might be the sketchiest place we stayed on our entire trip. Our hotel was above an adult video store, and the streets were packed with your basic big-city degenerates. I would have probably left out our visit to the city, but when trying, and failing, to get a bus to the Volcano, I saw a prothonotary warbler in a lone bush near the city center.
