Visits
- 2009-01-27: After our trip to the Mountain Pine Ridge (and more misinformation from the untrusty Lonely Planet Central America book) we ended up searching for a rumored campsite after dark. Following some signs and directions from the locals, we ended up at an orchard near the Barton Creek Cave. I am not going to give out any names or specific locations lest I spoil the surprise, but we were met by a man brandishing a revolver who was very angry that we were on his precious land (He was unaware that his wife had told us to drive this way). After awhile, the man realized that we were merely tourists, calmed down, and then invited us to camp on his land for free. We figured that, given the land owner's vigilance, we were probably safe to camp there, and he turned out to be a nice guy as well. Later, we took the canoe trip into the Barton Creek Cave. It was fun and spooky to canoe several hundred yards into a cave. We never did make it to the Lonely Planet recommended place (which was probably for the better). Most of the sightings from this location were near the mouth of the cave.
