I took a long taxi ride and then the bus out of Bangkok from the northern station. The bus was a very comfortable one surprisingly, and it only took a few hours to get to the gateway to the the park. There was pretty good wildlife there, I saw, while walking, a couple species of deer a bintaung, and some very fast running bright red jungle ground bird. This was long before I considered bringing a field guide on vacation.

Visits

  • 2013-02-10: Khao Yai National Park was one of the places in Thailand that I wanted to visit again, so we took the overnight train back to Bangkok, and then we rode a bus (for three hours) to get to Khao Yai. The guesthouse at Khao Yai was supposed to pick us up at the bus station, and eventually they did, but I was shocked at the changes that have happened in this area. What was once a mellow road to the park had been turned into a highway, and the guesthouse was right on the highway. Not pleasant at all. We were just in time to join the "bat tour", and this was a disappointment as well as the group to see the bats was something like sixteen people. Then, on the way to the bats, the guide saw a snake in the tree. Before anyone had a chance to see the snake however, he decided that he had to catch it. It could have been a really great photo if he had not done that. Despite the bumbling guide, the bats were pretty spectacular. But, I was pretty annoyed by the general circumstances of the tour, so we switched companies to do an overnight camping trip in the park. We drove around everywhere in the park, and we did a couple of jungle walks. The campground was absolutely packed with locals on a three-day holiday, but the camping was a good time, and there was even a dance-off to the Gangnam Style song.
