Visits

  • 2026-08-27: We dropped by a lava cave in the center of the island. It was quite touristy, and there were a number of signs asking not to disturb the precious ecosystem. In the meantime, the government had built an 11 acre parking lot right next to the cave. They are in the process of building a huge visitor center ON the entrance to the cave. There are concrete stairways covering a large portion of the walls and floors of the lava cave. Add to that, bright unnatural light blasted into the darkness of the cave during business hours. And it cost 10 Euros to go into the cave. Anyway, we drove over to another spot with a lake where we hung out until darkness waiting for Eurasian Woodcocks that never showed.
