  • 2025-04-02: Welcome to Martinique, where Island Time meets Laissez Faire. We arrived on the ferry from St. Lucia, and everything immediately became impossible. The rental car company was supposed to meet us at the ferry, but no one was there. This is after I tried to contact them many times by email and text beforehand. The ferry terminal did not have a wifi connection, nor did it have anywhere to buy a SIM card. Just when we had given up on the rental car shuttle, we got a phone call(!) while walking out of the port. This is very odd as the phone in question did not have service. Anyway, the shuttle was on the way. Once we arrived at the rental car counter, arriving amidst massive traffic, it took over an hour to get the car. Oh, and they were going to be closed in the morning for our flight, so it was going to be tooth and nail to get on our flight. We finally got out of the main city part of Martinique, and we randomly found this trail next to the road. There were signs about the Martinique Thrasher and how it is endangered and this is some of its last habitat. That, and the stray cat that probably eats ground feeding birds... We walked down to the beach amidst giant tropical trees followed by mangroves. The thrasher was much easier to find here than it was in St. Lucia. There was one right next to the parking lot.
