Mountain village

Visits

  • 2024-03-28: The next stop was the drive south where we intended to break up the journey with a night in the mountains. It was some real adventure on the road with about 10000 topes, aggressive passing on curvy roads, all the usual. We arrived in San Jose del Pacifico and immediately thrust into a mixed flock of birds just off the balcony to our cabin.
  • 2024-03-29: We woke up early to check out a fruiting tree on the main road. That quickly got annoying, however, due to a stream of trucks driving by. After walking around on the hotel property some more, we got a slice of pizza in town and headed toward the coast. There was a road a few miles past San Jose where the traffic was a lot lighter, so we walked around there to look for White-throated Jay. We didn't find it.
  • 2024-04-01: On the way back to San Jose, we took another shot at the El Manzanal area to continue looking for the White-throated Jay. After not finding that, we checked in to a hotel on the side of the road. For dinner, we decided to go the the "best" pizza restaurant. After driving on some crazy hilly road and a few dead ends, we found the restaurant. The pizza was good, but it wasn't the best.
  • 2024-04-02: Just before 1st light, I heard the White-throated Jay calling below in the valley. I spent the early morning walking on the road looking for it. This was a bit annoying as there was plenty of loud traffic on the road. We went back to try some more at El Manzanal, but we did not find it there either. Finally, we gave up, and we drove back to Oaxaca.
