Paramo

Visits

  • 2023-08-02: The previous night, I made the mistake of booking a hotel too close to the highway, and the sound of traffic throughout the night was not fun. In the morning, we were heading up the mountain to look for the Spectacled Bear and the Rufous-bellied Seedsnipe. The seedsnipe has been a nemesis of mine as I missed it in several attempts in Chile. Anyway, we arrived at the mountain, and it was very foggy and also very windy. We walked around freezing and getting wet (and barely not getting lost in the fog) for awhile, but there was no chance that we could find the seedsnipe in those conditions. Later in the day, we decided to give it another try in case the fog might clear. The fog did not clear however, and we were walking around again in the miserable conditions. I was watching my feet as to not trip over the paramo when I looked ahead to where the guide was walking. Just as I looked up, he flushed a seedsnipe! Later, we headed over to the Papallacta side to look for tapirs. It was raining there too. Then, I missed my bus by 5 minutes. The guide was nice enough to drive me to Baeza.
