Scott Peak, Idaho!

By Scott Bowers

Scott Peak is a beautiful peak at the border of Montana on the Continental Divide. It is over 12,000 feet (4,000 meters) above sea level located in the Targhee National Forest near Dubois, Idaho. Other noteworthy places nearby are the U.S. Sheep Experimentation Station and Yellowstone National Park. In August 1993, my brother and I set forth to climb this mighty mountain. We drove for about 50 miles on dirt roads to get to a really nice campsite which was at the trailhead to the peak. Unfortunately, we had slept late and we were mostly unprepared for an overnight campout, so we never made it to the top. Late in the afternoon, I saw a very large moose on the trail (I ran away). Other wildlife of note were some cows on the road and a red tailed hawk sitting on a fencepost. People waved to us as we drove down the road toward I-15. We saw some cowboys, too.
