Moving the Car

7/10/2012: The next stop was the Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge near Jamestown. While I was at the rest stop, I learned that there is a special birding map available for the Jamestown area. The people in the gas station had no idea what I was talking about, however, and they had never heard of Arrowwood. After driving around town for a few minutes, I did manage to find the road to the refuge.

It was approaching mid-day, and the weather was starting to get hot. I spent some time at the Sharp-tailed Grouse lek, but it was way too late in the season to see anything there. There was a walking trail full of warblers and even a raccoon.

I never did find the bird-finding map. The sandpipers that I was hoping to see remained mostly hidden, but just outside the refuge, I did find a pool with a few sandpipers as well as the Black Tern. One of the biologists at the refuge told me about some displaying Upland Sandpipers, but those were nowhere to be found.
