1/28/2012: We had some trouble with the rental car company in Auckland when they refused to rent the car to us because "we don't process new rentals for 30 minutes prior to closing". Our ferry was not arriving in Auckland until 20 minutes before they were closing, and they were not keen to the possibility of going home 10 minutes late.

Whatever. We lucked out in that there was a ferry going to our next location, so we dropped the rental car and took the ferry and bus to Whitianga.

The reason for the trip to Whitianga was to catch a pelagic boat trip. The weather was perfect for a boat trip although the calm conditions in the ocean probably hindered our bird count. The reason for coming out here was to find the Pycrofts Petrel. They breed in the Mercury Islands near Whitianga, but unfortunately we did not get any close looks at the petrel. Then, I left my jacket on the boat.
