Half Moon Caye, Belize (Center on Interactive Map)

This cay is on Lighthouse Reef about 50 miles or so from the coast of Belize. The area is most famous for the "Blue Hole"... a subterranean sinkhole that attracts scuba divers. Half Moon Caye is a well known nesting site for Red-footed Boobies and Magnificent Frigatebirds.

Mexico to Panama

1/23/2009: We were supposed to come out to the reef to do some snorkeling and scuba diving, but Barbara broke her camera, giving her an excuse to spend the day in exciting Belize City. I got stuck with the boat, and that was a little unfortunate in that it was a very windy day, and waves were literally washing over the front of the 60 foot boat. We survived the two hour boat ride, however, and the reef made for good scuba conditions despite the bad weather. I skipped diving all the way into the blue hole. It is a 140 foot dive, and it surprised me that people would take that kind of risk to see some submerged rocks in a country that is full of caves. We did two other shallower dives along the reefs, and the coral and fish life was among the best visits to the wilderness that I have had anywhere. Lunch time was spent on the island where it was easy to see the boobies and frigatebirds. We finished the day with the two hour boat ride back to Cay Caulker in stormy conditions without losing any passengers or crew.
